Pilates with Hafren

Pilates differs from yoga in being a physical system that uses specific, targeted exercises to improve strength, flexibility and posture with a particular focus on your body’s core. It is a disciplined practice that needs to be done on a regular basis to provide benefit.
By working with small groups, Lisa can adapt your Pilates practice to your ability. Belonging to a small group provides the social support and enjoyment that many people like when they practice. It is suitable for all levels of ability.

My Yoga Journey

My yoga journey began in 2000 when a friend suggested I attend a class. I took to it like the proverbial duck to water, immediately recognising not just the physical benefits, but how it made me feel and how my mind seemed to become clearer and more focused.

An unexpected ( but thankfully recoverable) health issue gave me an opportunity to take stock of my life. I realized that becoming a yoga teacher would bring meaning and a sense of purpose to my life – a way of benefiting others and giving something back. The natural progression of this was to become a yoga therapist.

I am much influenced by the teachings of Patanjali and the psychology of the mind represented in the Yoga Sutra.

Frequently Asked Questions

I'm not flexible, can I do yoga?

Yes you can! Many people think they have to be flexible to do yoga. This is simply not true. I tell my students that it is O.K. to start where you are. Yoga is a way to discover your body and explore its limitations. The more you practice, the more opportunity there is for your body to change in a positive way.

I am nervous about my first yoga session. How do I prepare?
Wear comfortable, loose clothing and be prepared to move barefoot. I recommend that you bring your own non slip yoga mat. Come with an open mind and trust that you will not be asked to do anything that is beyond your capabilities.
I am a very unfit person. Should I start with yoga or Pilates?
In this case I recommend individual yoga sessions. They will enable you to discover yoga in a welcoming environment with a practice specifically designed to suit your unique ability. This type of approach is safer and more effective if you suffer from chronic pain and you need individual attention and adaptation.
I am new to Pilates will I be able to keep up with the rest of the class?

Yes. The class is paced so that you will have time to experience each exercise. Instructions are clear and precise. You are encouraged to approach the moves in a non competitive way, connecting more with a sense of fun.

I have recently given birth and want to get back into shape. When can I start exercising again?
Doctors usually recommend six weeks of recovery time after a normal delivery and more after a Caesarean section. It is best to check with your health professional and when you have the go ahead to start exercising book in for a session.
Is yoga a religion? I do not want to contradict my religious beliefs
Yoga is not a religion. It’s a philosophy that began in India about 5000 years ago. One of the most popular yoga texts is Yoga Sutra, written by Patanjali millennia ago. These writings provide a framework for spiritual growth and control over the physical and mental body.

Yoga sometimes combines with other philosophies, such as Hinduism or Buddhism, but they are not necessary for studying or practicing yoga.
